I spent a month here, and it was the best hostel I’ve stayed in. Everything is clean, the shared spaces are wide and comfortable, and the air conditioning is usually on in both rooms and common areas. The bathroom is always clean, and staff are friendly. They even left me a note and a Sabah keychain on my last day. The location is handy for essentials at the mall and for Anjung market, which opens every night. There’s a TV with Netflix, free cookies, tea, coffee, filtered hot and cold water, a microwave, and pretty much everything to make a stay comfortable. It’s not near the beach, but the service and access to everything else make up for that. If you’re staying a while, I’d get lunch at the food court in centre point mall behind the hostel. The local food court is a little hidden: find KFC, then take the alley on its left. I’m not vegetarian, but the Liew Chai vegetarian food there is cheap and delicious. For dinner, I’d pick up food at Anjung Kinabalu night market, where there’s a stall selling RM 3 rice and noodles. If I ever open a hostel, this is the one I’d learn from.

The hostel was clean and well maintained, and the beds were comfortable with privacy curtains. Breakfast was available around the clock, which was a nice touch, and the common area had an amazing view. It wasn’t the most social place, but that was alright. I was satisfied with my stay.

Cindy made a tough stretch of my trip much easier. After weeks of backpacking on the mainland, I aggravated a pinched nerve in my neck and stayed 12 nights, 10 longer than I’d planned, while getting an MRI and treatment at Gleneagles Hospital. The care there was excellent, though not cheap. Cindy was kind about the situation and moved me to a lower bunk on the fourth floor, so I could stay put instead of being shifted around because of group bookings. The hostel itself is good value in KK. The showers, bathrooms, and places to relax are all top-notch. There’s no stove, which I actually liked because the air doesn’t fill with the byproducts of frying. A microwave in the third-floor kitchen was enough for the low-key cooking I need for my special diet, and there’s a decent-sized fridge. Filtered water is available on every floor, along with free coffee, tea, white bread, peanut butter, jam, and Nutella all day. The staff deserve 10/10 for friendliness, communication, empathy, diligence, and attitude. They speak English, and Cindy also speaks Chinese. My one concern is the regular, heavy use of cleaning products. There was a strong chemical smell throughout the place. I spoke with Cindy and sent her information about possible respiratory effects. I hope Homy treats that as the constructive feedback I intended, so guests and staff aren’t exposed to those chemicals in future. Clean doesn’t automatically mean healthy. Later I stayed at Faloe Hostel and liked the overall experience there a little more. There wasn’t a chemical smell, and the staff were amazing too.

Came back after two years and was really impressed to find the facilities still so well maintained and the staff service still top-notch. The familiar views and great location made it an enjoyable stay again. There are also a lot more helpful signs and reminders around now. If everyone follows them, it should make things better for all of us.

I liked having a kitchen available any time, and the lounge is spacious enough that the small room wasn’t much of an issue. As a solo traveller at homy seafront hostel, I did have to find a place to pray since the room is a bit tight.
