The night cruise turned out to be especially good value, with two and a half hours on the river, and I'd recommend it. The package also included a night jungle hike, a walk up Bukit Teresek, and a cruise to Lata Berkoh. We enjoyed them all: interesting things to spot on the night hike, a hot but worthwhile trek, and lovely, unusual scenery along the river. Mutiara Taman Negara is inside the national park, which made it easy to explore during our free time. We spent some of that time at the Tahan hide watching for wildlife. We found the room spacious, clean, quiet for a rainforest setting, and comfortably cool with the air conditioning. Some extra furnishings would have helped, like a bedside table on each side, but the room was fine for us. The staff and guides were welcoming and attentive throughout. The included meals were uneven for us as vegetarians. Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of well-cooked choices, and lunch had a few options; staff were happy to make one dish vegetarian. Dinner was the weak point. Most dishes contained meat or fish, leaving us with things like potatoes, rice, and vegetables. One night the pasta sauce had tuna, when a plain tomato sauce could easily have been offered. For a costly package, dinner matters, and the buffet let us down. The overall package felt overpriced, partly because the schedule had a lot of empty time. On arrival day, there was only a roughly 45-minute night hike. The next day had a few hours on Bukit Teresek, which can be done without a guide, and the self-guided Lata Berkoh cruise. There was nothing on that evening or the third day. I would have liked another activity, perhaps a second night hike or someone at the hide for a few hours after dark to look for visiting animals, though I get the impression sightings are rare these days. Each room gets 30 MYR per night in credit for activities and food, but I would rather have the credit removed and the price lowered by the same amount. The location, surroundings, and staff are lovely, and I'd still recommend staying here if you want to explore Taman Negara. For what we paid, though, it was hard to see the full value. Mutiara could be amazing, but it falls short, as other reviews have suggested. Some fairly simple changes could improve the experience.

The last thing I'd flag is the walking. Our room was among the furthest from the restaurant, lobby, and activity meeting point. A more shaded path or buggy service would help. I walked over 17,000 steps on our hiking day, so if you're not fit, this place may not suit you. We finished with a magical night santai boat ride, floating in the dark on Tembeling River under the moonlight. We'd extended our stay by one night, and that evening we hiked up Teresek Hill again after most visitors had gone to the Orang Asli tour. It was quiet and peaceful, though there were lots of sweat bees at each viewpoint. Public holidays brought crowds, with people all over the hill and at the Orang Asli village, so I'd avoid those dates if you can. The activities were well organized, and the guides, including Pak Jus and Zalmi, were friendly and helpful. Staff at registration, the activity counter, and the restaurant were courteous too. It felt like relatives looking after us, like being at home away from home. I did notice some other guides smoking in the jungle, despite signs saying smoking is prohibited and carries a fine. My own guides weren't smoking. The restaurant food was basic rather than luxurious, but it was sufficient, with acceptable taste, variety, and freshness. Our room was clean and modern, with new air conditioning, a modern bathroom, clean sheets and floor, a safe, and a bottle of water per person each day. All of that was provided in the jungle. It was a much better stay than I expected.

The food could use more flavor and variety. The rooms were good, if a little old, and well maintained. We didn't see many insects, though most that did get in seemed to come through the gap under the door. Activities were enjoyable. The trek climbs steeply uphill, and the rapids were extremely fun.

We ate the buffet at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it was a highlight. The dishes changed each day and were all good, so even during a longer stay we didn't get tired of them. The resort is comfortable and beautiful, right inside the national park. There was something different to spot on the grounds every day, from tropical birds and monkeys to small and large lizards, butterflies, and other interesting bugs. A few miles of boardwalk let us explore farther into the jungle on our own. For longer treks beyond where the boardwalk ends, you can hire a guide. Everyone on staff was friendly and made us feel welcome. They got to know us and were enthusiastic about sharing tips for finding the wildlife we hoped to see.

The way the team helped us get back to Jerentut deserves a big thank you. Flooding caused trouble on the roads, but they gave us sensible advice, kept us updated, and checked on our progress until the replacement 4x4 taxi they arranged got us to our destination. Everyone we dealt with, at reception, the activities desk, and the restaurant, was friendly and helpful. We were there in low season, so it rained, which was much more comfortable than the heat, and we nearly had the place to ourselves. The activities were excellent, and we learned so much from our guides. The buffet suited us as hungry cyclists: there was plenty of food and a good range, even if it wasn't especially exciting. You can't stay much closer to the National Park. The chalets sit among beautiful gardens, where plenty of wildlife wanders in. They're old but full of character and spacious. Some people complain about walking around the grounds, but I liked that as part of this kind of stay. There was a buggy service for anyone who needed help.
