The stairs are the main thing to consider here. They’re steep, and getting to Level 2, where rooms start with 2, such as 215, can leave you breathless. Anyone with mobility issues should avoid this hotel. A porter can help with luggage, but the climb is still a lot. I was pleasantly surprised by the free light breakfast. It’s just bread with jam and cereal with milk, but that’s enough for me to start the day. Daily housekeeping was excellent. They take a refundable RM100 deposit at check-in. We got Room 215 after Helena helped us check in. Her warm smile and cheerful manner made us feel welcome. I think it’s the only room with a balcony and a stunning view, though I’m not sure whether the other rooms have windows. I’d never stayed at Marian Boutique Lodging Hotel before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but the price caught my eye, especially with the waterfront and major tourist attractions right nearby. I’d seen comments about loud noise. I heard a little traffic, but it was minimal at night and I slept very well. It’s good value for money if you don’t mind the stairs.

The rooms don’t block sound well. I could clearly hear ordinary conversations from guests on other floors, which made things feel less private. A stay outside peak season might be better, since fewer guests could mean less disruptive noise. I liked the pleasant atmosphere and the antique decorations throughout the property. They give it a distinctive, curated feel. Having a pool was a real plus, and we also got a complimentary breakfast, which was a nice gesture since it wasn’t in the original booking. A “No child policy” came up during booking, but we saw several children at the property. Clearer information on the website would help guests know what to expect if they’re looking for a particular environment.

The original features, shared areas and swimming pool were highlights for me. The hotel used to be a boarding school in the 1900s. Staff gave excellent service: they accommodated my date changes and kept my luggage while I was away for a night. Stairs may be tough with heavy suitcases, though a porter can help. Rooms facing away from the road are quieter. Good value overall.

My stay at this so-called boutique lodging house was deeply disappointing. It’s advertised as “vintage” and “charming,” but to me it came across as old and badly maintained. There’s a difference between antique style and neglect, and this felt like neglect. The mattress had visible stains, the walls had holes and obvious damage, and the room felt abandoned rather than welcoming. Furniture throughout was worn out: chairs wobbled and tables were scratched, making the rooms uncomfortable instead of cozy. Many doors were rusty, hard to open and felt unsafe, which raised concerns for me about security and basic upkeep. The bathroom was just as frustrating. The toilet door was broken and barely closed, so there was little privacy. Those conditions seem completely unreasonable for a place charging boutique-level prices. Cleanliness should be a priority, but it clearly wasn’t here. Online, some reviews describe the lodging house as luxurious, clean and well maintained. That doesn’t match what I experienced, and the reviews seem possibly fake, which feels misleading to potential guests. This place fell short on basic comfort, cleanliness and honesty. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, and would suggest looking elsewhere to avoid disappointment.

The main hallway sitting areas stood out: cool, comfortable spots to catch up at the end of the day. The rooms were clean and reasonably well appointed, and the boarding house has been beautifully redecorated. Its location was perfect. Breakfast was very simple.
