The little corner shoplot is right in the heart of a working fishing village, with everything walkable. It feels more like a homestay: shoes off, hammocks in the common room, and coffee and snacks on the honour system. No reception desk. Wi-Fi is fine for browsing and works best in the common room, which is a lovely spot for cards or chatting with backpackers and the management's friends, who can put you in touch with the boss. Rooms are small, simple, and clean. Curtains give privacy, and there are places to dry clothes. The aircon can make it feel like winter, though there's a fan if you'd rather not wake up frozen. The shower works, though it feels like it's held together by hope and duct tape. Doors squeak, and hallway conversations carry. It's no Hilton, but it makes you feel part of the kampung. Step outside and you're among kopitiams and small restaurants in the fishing village. The staff deserve a special mention. Mr Low might check you in, and he also sells morning kuih by the roadside. If you're feeling lazy, he'll even take you on his motorcycle and give you a mini tour of town. Other staff can help with taxis, scooter rentals, dinner suggestions, and even getting you out of scams. They make the place feel human. You might get treated to a meal, asked to join a social media photo shoot, and they'll help make last-minute bookings work. Hospitality dialled up to eleven. If you're after a quiet stay with some adventure and staff who care more than most hotels, Pangkor Guesthouse SPK is a good fit. You won't have sand between your toes right outside, but you may leave with stories, smiles, and a few new friends.

A decent basic option for backpackers on the island's east side, in a fishing village. The dorm has aircon, a warm shower, a towel, and keys for the front door, room, and locker. Wi-Fi works best in the sitting area. You can rent a scooter or bike, but those hills are steep on a bicycle. There's a lot of traffic between here and the ferry, which no longer stops in this town. If you can afford it, staying on the west side might be nice too, since that's where the beaches and sunsets are.

I had a really good stay in the dorm. It's clean, has curtains and somewhere to dry wet clothes, and there are local food options within walking distance. The room has AC and fans too. It may be far from the beach, but the host can arrange a scooter rental at a good price. 🙂

Low really made the guesthouse feel welcoming and personal. The service was helpful and impeccable from the moment we arrived until we left. It's also a distinctive place, kept in very good shape, with thoughtful little touches you don't usually get in budget accommodation.

The owner is cool and the place is nice. Booking the dorm directly there costs 30 RM.
