Old Penang Hotel - Trang Road

The only real plus was that it was cheap and near George Town city centre, where you can stroll around. The walls are thin, so outside noise carries, and the whole place is worn out, with an old Sino-British colonial feel. I paid for a room with its own bathroom but was given a shared one instead, which made the price not worth it. I regret staying here. Worst experience ever, and I’ll never set foot in this quaint hotel again.

The central location is great, close to markets, shops, the main attractions, and plenty of amazing food if you’re willing to wander off the beaten path and try new things. I had a good stay at this simple place to sleep and rest. The room was clean and had air conditioning, and the small bathroom was sufficient. Shiniy at reception was very helpful with my questions.

The room was basically just a bed, as you’d expect for the price, and that was fine. Staff were nice, and at least it was better than being homeless. The toilet was a hole in the floor with no toilet paper. Every now and then the shower spat out a reddish-brown liquid, and the water smelled like metal.

The hotel is old, but the antique-style interior may suit people who like that look. There’s a ceiling fan and air conditioning in the room, and check-in was easy with no deposit. I stayed one night in a queen room with an attached bathroom. It was a good size for two, with blankets and towels provided. The location is handy too, within walking distance of GAMA mall for shopping and nearby restaurants. There are some inconveniences: public parking is hard to find, there was no hot water in the shower, and eating in the room isn’t allowed. The TV only had three channels. There were no toiletries or complimentary drinks in the room, and the water dispenser was only in the hallway.
