We booked the Golden Arowana bungalow at the end of August through Agoda for RM230+ a night. It was very clean and had three spacious bedrooms, each with two single beds, plus attached bathrooms and AC in every room. There was ample parking, though the beach view was blocked by trees. The kitchen came with a kettle, mugs, sink, dishwashing soap, water bottles and a medium-sized fridge, along with a dining table for five. The bathroom only had bar soap. In the living room, there was a new LCD TV, wooden seating and an air-conditioner. An iron was provided in the bungalow. Guests in other rooms would need to walk to the ironing room at the lobby. There’s a kids' playground and direct access to Purnama beach through the back gates. The staircase is very steep. The gate was meant to be open from 7.30am to 7.30pm, but security guard Mr Naim kindly opened it for us until 9pm. The cafe was closed because we were the only guests. WiFi and the TV didn’t work, and there were no TV channels at all. There was no phone in the room, no swimming pool, and no tea or coffee. If you find the bungalow for less than RM220, I’d say that’s fair for the service.

The beach is just behind the background, and there’s a background for kids to play with. The hotel also has WiFi, a closed parking area on the grounds, and towels and bed sheets that looked quite new and were pretty clean. But at night, you can’t get back into the hotel grounds if you go out to eat late. Reception is empty and everyone is asleep, so you’re left outside. There was no hot water in our room. We asked for it to be fixed, but nobody did anything. Noise was the biggest problem. We could hear people talking in other rooms and everyone on the floor. If you’re fine waking up at 7-8 with the kids and other guests, then going to bed after everyone else falls asleep, it may suit you. We couldn’t get enough rest. On Monday at 9am, the hotel started noisy work in the garden. With the windows closed and air conditioning on, we still woke up wondering what was going on. Maybe the walls are thin because the building used to be a hospital. There was no water, tea or coffee in the room, though you could buy water from reception. I don't think you can get a peaceful night's sleep here.

The room was clean and tidy, with a hot shower. You’ll need to bring shampoo since they only provide bath soap, and there’s no kettle, though each floor has a hot water dispenser. The cafeteria food wasn’t bad, and the staff were friendly and helpful. It’s only a short walk, about three to four minutes, to the sea behind the hotel. I was a little disappointed by the view because the area was crowded with campers, maybe because of the long Chinese New Year holiday. This is an old-fashioned, basic hotel, and the notice board says it opened in 1973. Don’t expect too much.

The rooms were very clean, including the beds and sheets, and check-in was quick. There’s plenty of parking, and the weekend rate was cheap at 100. It’s also close to Purnama Beach. It used to be a three-storey training centre, built in 1957, and it’s near the beach. There’s no lift, so getting to rooms on the upper floors means using the stairs. The route down to the beach is a steep staircase and can be tiring. You can also hear people in the next room through the connecting door because the sound insulation is poor.

The staff were really friendly, and you can get straight to the beach from the back of the hotel. It’s an older place, but I was surprised by how clean and well looked after it was. Had a wonderful stay.
