Perhentian Tropicana Inn

Don't go there. I had an okay stay, but after leaving the island I quickly realized I’d left my AirPods in the room and called the hostel. They said they couldn’t find them, though they might look if someone came by. The next day someone did come by, but wasn’t allowed to search, even though the live location still showed them in the room. I tried contacting the hostel several times and they’ve ignored me since. A week later the AirPods location suddenly changed, but they say they know nothing about it. Scandalous service.

Think carefully before booking, especially if you’re with small children or parents over 60, or aren’t fit enough for a hike. Getting there from Coral Bay jetty is already exhausting, and the place sits in the jungle up a steep stretch of about 50 meters. I wish the agent had made that clear. The receptionist wasn’t very friendly, and the room matched the pictures, but the cheaper option didn’t feel cheap. We paid RM420 in peak season for a fan room with no water heater, bottled water or internet, and no normal phone line either.

The nature around the place means jungle mosquitoes can be active in the evenings, so bring repellent. Otherwise, I had a pleasant, comfortable stay. My room was clean and well maintained, and had what I needed for a relaxing break. Staff were friendly, attentive and ready to help. Long Beach is a short walk away, with local restaurants and food stalls nearby. A good choice for comfort, convenience and a bit of nature. I’d recommend it.

I was disappointed and uncomfortable here, and it didn’t feel worth the money. The blanket was so thin that we froze all night. There was no tissue in the room or toilet, no kettle for hot water, and the WiFi was so slow it was practically useless.
