Nikgold Garden Resort Kundasang

The road into Nikgold Garden Homestay is steep, so take care, especially at night or in the rain. Once there, the quiet, green surroundings and fresh air make it a nice break from the city. Mount Kinabalu looks especially beautiful in the early morning. Our room was spacious, clean, comfortable, and had the utilities we needed for a convenient stay. A good option if you like nature, peaceful surroundings, and impressive views.

The view of Mt Kinabalu was magnificent, but rain caused water to leak through the rooftop in some of the units we rented. It might be worth repairing the roof to improve its waterproofing. The toilet sinks could use hot water too, as the water was damn cold in the morning. Retractable waterproof blinds outside would also let guests sit at the tables in the rain.

The scenery is excellent on a clear early morning, with the front mountain on laban rata and St John Peak at the summit visible. The hotel is away from the main road, reached by a small unpaved road with a steep slope. The room is a bit small and suits two people. Sunday is RM 150 for one day, while weekend rates are expensive.

We loved the privacy, cooling air, pets, and spectacular views around the hotel. The dogs are very alert, and thanks for looking after them. Please feed them well. The internet was poor, with no connection inside the room. Getting back to the hotel at night was difficult: the junction from the main road had no street lights or illuminated signboard, and big trucks were using the busy road. We missed the turn and took a while to find our way back. If you don't know the area, don't stay out late. It's dangerous.
