The Last Frontier Boutique Resort

We’ll remember our three days in the Kinabatangan jungle for the rest of our lives. Seeing a mother orangutan and her baby in the trees beside the resort was incredible, and the wildlife on the river tours and around the property was spectacular. Ryan was a brilliant guide. Gert and Jason were wonderful hosts, and the whole staff helped make the stay unforgettable. The rooms are comfortable and the meals are delicious. After climbing the stairs, you’re rewarded with amazing views and the feeling of being right among the jungle sights and sounds. It was a truly magical three-day, two-night visit.

Getting to this place means tackling 600 steps, and choosing to stay here was one of the harder decisions I made. I ended up loving it. It has the feel of visiting a slightly crazy friend who left everything behind to start over in an exotic part of the world. The experience felt personal and special. The jungle surrounds you, with its sounds all around throughout the day. The food and facilities are excellent, and everything is organized so there are plenty of activities to fill your time. They also filter their own water, avoiding plastic bottles entirely. I honestly can’t recommend it enough.

Be ready for a lot of steps to reach the property. You don’t have to be fit, but you do need to be comfortable with some exercise. The climb is worth it for the spectacular setting, cooler evenings, and surroundings money can’t buy. We also met fellow guests who were passionate about wildlife and ecology, and their enthusiasm, along with our expert guide Ryan, rubbed off on us. We learned a lot. The team is fastidious and top rate, from the hosts to the guides and support staff. The food was excellent and beautifully presented, everything was immaculate, and the cold beer was fairly priced. The quiet up there is unbeatable, and I really didn’t want to leave. Ryan was a fun, lovely guide, and thanks to him we saw loads of monkeys, an orang utan right by the lodge stairs, and lots of other beautiful animals. The stairs up the hill were manageable even with our travel backpacks, and they worked up an appetite for the delicious meals Jason prepared for guests. We had such a great time at Gert's and Jason's place 💚 They’re both interesting to talk to and taught us a lot about life on Borneo. Thanks to them and the rest of the team for such a memorable experience 🙏
