We saw turtles everywhere, along with loads of fish, from pipefish and crocodile fish to a school of bumphead parrot fish and huge napoleon wrasse. A great base for snorkeling around Mabul and Sipidan. Shout out to our guy Arif.

The staff were warm and helpful, and the peaceful setting with lovely sea views made it a nice place to unwind before heading out around Mabul or Semporna. I stayed one night at Mabul Bungalow Semporna and found the room basic, clean, and comfortable, with enough essential facilities. Being close to the jetty made snorkeling and diving easy. Good value, and I was happy with the stay.

At peak holiday times, we were told there could be as many as a thousand day trippers passing right outside the rooms. They pay RM50, then crowd the way and take their time posing for beauty pageant photos, leaving you feeling like you're in their way. There was constant noise, including people shouting from boats while haggling with villagers over a 1 RM coconut discount. Expect empty bottles and coconuts left outside your room. If you want the experience of being an animal in a zoo or on safari, stay here.

The island and resort have a serious plastic problem. Locals may be used to it, but the resort should take responsibility by backing education and island-wide cleanup efforts. The place, staff, and diving were all amazing, which makes this harder to say. I’d return only if I saw sustainability initiatives getting underway. I hope the 3 stars encourage the hotel to give these issues more attention.

This was a stop on our island hopping and snorkeling trip. It was crowded, though there were lots of photo spots with stunning views. Entry costs RM50, and QR payment is accepted. Bajau laut kids sell coconut drinks for RM5 each, as well as slipper lobsters. Some may come close and be aggressive, so stay alert. A few also ask for food or money.
