Machangulo Beach Lodge

The staff were amazing, and we ate really well during a great week at Machangulo Beach Lodge. There’s plenty to do around the water, including swimming, beach walks, and fishing. Someone was raving about the diving, though we only went snorkeling and still saw a lot.

We loved the activities, especially the two hour mangrove kayaking trip, where you can spot wildlife among the mangroves. Snorkeling is available too, with lots of tropical fish to see. At night there were so many stars, and sunset walks along the beach were lovely. We had a great three night stay. The beach is quiet, private, and beautiful, and the room had an amazing view and pretty interior. The food was great, and the friendly staff welcomed us with a song when we arrived. When we left, all of them came down to the beach to say goodbye. It’s a lovely choice for couples or families.

The boat ride across the bay takes 75 min, and it can get very rough. That’s the one drawback. The staff were friendly, the rooms were nice, and the food was good.

I liked this lodge a lot, even though it had its flaws. The view from the location is spectacular, but in my opinion the sea currents make swimming there unsafe. When the wind blows, sand keeps getting onto the counters and floors because the roofs aren’t sealed well. The rooms look amazing in photos. Staff below manager level were friendly but couldn’t understand requests in English. Food was truly average, and since there’s no other option on the island, it needs improvement. I won’t return.
