The view from the restaurant is great, and you can sit on stools in the pool at the bar while ordering food and drinks. The diving was incredible too. The northern part of Manta Reef gave me some of the best underwater experiences I’ve ever had. Our villa was perched high on a dune, as was the whole resort, overlooking the estuary. I’m not sure what it’s technically called, so I’ll stick with “estuary.” It’s more like a tidal swamp, with tropical trees standing in the water as the tide comes in. Surreal and stunning, and it really lives up to its name. One night we had a hilarious language exchange with a Mozambican villager. We taught him some Afrikaans swear words, and he quickly caught on that they were the “wrong” words. Then he taught us a Portuguese phrase that we spent the night repeating to the waiters, who kept saying, “No no no.” When we finally asked what it meant, he explained it meant, “I hooked up with a 💃 in Maputo last night.” 🤣🤣🤣 We thought we were being clever, but he played us harder. We’d thought it was a compliment the whole time. Absolutely priceless.

We tried to attend the sunset event and arrived before its 16:30 start. There was no sign saying bookings were required. The venue was busy, so we waited in the entrance queue to be seated. While we were at the front, a group walked past everyone waiting and took the last available table. It wasn’t marked reserved, and staff were still bringing in that table and chairs to make extra seats. When we raised it with the group, they told us to speak to their friend, the owner. The owner showed no concern for the roughly 20 people waiting and just shrugged when we explained. The organisation was very poor and the situation was handled extremely unprofessionally. It made clear that unless you’re friends with the owner, you won’t be treated fairly. Wouldn’t recommend.

The sunset is worth seeing from The Thirsty Parrot, perched on a dune with great views. There’s a pool, good food and sometimes live music.

Great range of drinks and a breathtaking view from the deck. The stools in the pool are a quirky, unique feature!

We had good food with flavours that really satisfied, and the sunset was beautiful, though the skies were a bit murky. I recently enjoyed dining at the Sunset Lodge/Thirsty Parrot. Even with the less-than-perfect weather, the meal and ambience made it a pleasant visit.
