The Zambezi flowing past a little island makes a lovely setting for this lodge. Each of the eight couples has a separate building with its own plunge pool. Add the grounds, great food, excursions and excellent staff, and it’s hard to ask for more.

The boat ride to the lodge was a highlight right away. We saw our first hippos within five minutes, and I was giddy. Before that, a lovely staff member met us at Kasane airport, drove us in an open-air jeep and helped us through customs. At the lodge, the welcome continued with help for our bags and cocktails. Everything about the trip felt seamless. I’ve travelled a lot, and I can say without hesitation that this is a real hidden gem. There’s delicious food (you might gain a little weight), cold drinks, lovely conversation, local culture, beautiful scenery, peace and wildlife everywhere.
