We came back to Zambezi Mubala Lodge in 2025 after spending New Year’s Eve there in 2021 and being impressed by the place and the service. This time was unfortunately a big disappointment, and we regret booking so many nights. Meals were poor, with burnt dishes and dry burgers that had no sauce or other option to make them palatable. The choices were repetitive all week, with deep-fried fish, deep-fried chicken, wraps, and burgers offered again and again for lunch and dinner. Even the Greek salad came without dressing. There’s no kids’ menu, so every day we had to place a separate order for our toddler. On our first evening, we asked for a meal for the toddler and were told they were too busy and that we should have requested children’s meals in advance. That was upsetting, especially since we’d included our children’s ages when booking. The family room also lacked basic things for a young child. There was no bathtub or basin suitable for bathing a baby, so we had to use the sink. Service was slow and inattentive throughout the stay. Staff often stood around the bar, and even after we finished eating or drinking, it took a long time for anyone to clear the table. This visit fell far below the standard we’d experienced in 2021.

The rooms were bright and welcoming, everything worked perfectly, and the view across the Zambezi was impressive. Getting from the camp to the lodge by boat was a highlight, with crocodiles and hippos along the way. We also loved the sunset cruise and the wildlife we saw. Service let the place down. Most staff seemed to stay around the bar instead of looking after guests or the buffet. The restaurant needed more attention too, like clearing empty tables, sweeping the floor, and picking up bits of litter. Pool service was nearly nonexistent, and nobody came by to collect rubbish or tidy away used towels, which felt sad at such a beautiful spot. We enjoyed our Zambezi cruise, although the guide didn’t have much to say. The setting is stunning, but the service and attention don’t quite match what you’d expect at these prices.

We popped in for coffee and cake. The waitress first said they didn’t have cake, so we asked what desserts were available, and in the end we got what we wanted. The coffee was lovely, and the setting was beautiful, with fish eagles flying past. A nice little outing.

The tiger fishing on the Zambezi was the highlight for me, and I might come back next year. Zambezi Mubala Lodge has huge chalets looking out over the river, delicious food, a great pool, friendly staff, a good bar, and a wonderful gift shop. A fabulous place to spend a few days.

Even though we were only there for one night, nobody in our tour group wanted to leave. The rooms were spacious and modern, with lots of lovely little touches, and dinner was delicious. That was the best fillet steak I’ve ever had. Staff were attentive without getting in the way. I loved everything, from the boat ride to the lodge to the accommodation and the people. Nothing disappointed, and I’d love to come back.
