That tiger fishing trip was a real highlight, and one I won’t forget. We ended up at Zambezi Mubala Camp for several days after our car suffered serious engine damage and couldn’t be repaired, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Gondwana shuttle picked us up in Katima Mulilo late in the evening, which was a huge relief. The setting is beautiful, and both the campsite and tented camps are very well kept. A special thanks to Henny, the camp manager. He was incredibly kind, professional, and helpful while we were dealing with a difficult situation. The staff are friendly and professional too. I’d happily recommend spending a few days at this wonderful camp.

The campsite and the camp were both a pleasure to stay at, and well worth the drive. It also makes a convenient base for day trips to Botswana and Zimbabwe. The scenery is beautiful, with birds, monkeys, and lovely plant life, plus two resident crocs on the opposite bank, which were the cherry on top. The staff and management couldn’t have done more. And Hennie, you’ve made us loyal to Gondwana for good.

We’d recommend this camp without hesitation. It’s a green oasis beside the Zambezi, with really friendly staff and great activities. Our three-hour boat trip was full of fish eagles, and we also spotted hippos and crocodiles. When we got back, there was a snack platter waiting for us, a lovely touch.

We had a lovely birding boat cruise, and our guide was great. It was just the two of us, and we felt completely safe with her. We spotted hippos and several bird species that were new to us, with the skimmer becoming our favourite. Another boat took us across to the sister Zambezi Mabula lodge, where we had coffee and cake and then relaxed. The restaurant looked like a fun spot, and I can imagine it working really well for a group of friends. The camp is very well run. The manageress in June 2023 was on top of everything, met the guests, and took an interest in what they liked. One day she even arranged for someone to call us so we could see a particular turaco found only in that area. We’re not fishing people, so there wasn’t a huge amount for us to do. Three days probably would have been enough. Our four-sleeper tent was in perfect condition and closest to the water, but unfortunately the tents all faced inward in a circle. Some campsites are right at the water’s edge, and we would have loved to watch the river activity and sunset from there. Birders come to see one of the largest seasonal colonies of Carmine bee-eaters. The camp uses that video for promotion, but you need to visit between September and November to see the birds.

We stayed at Mubala campsite on 13/1/2026. It’s in a fantastic location, clean, and well kept. We’ll certainly go back. Nothing to fault!
