Monitel

The restaurant has a decent range of salads and grilled meats, and the staff are friendly. It’s a small family-run place about a minute from Koumac, basic but comfortable. Room service is good, though you’ll have to ask for fresh towels every few days.

For the price, I’d come back. The food was okay too, and while the WiFi was bad, it seemed to be that way almost everywhere. The Monitel is fine, just don’t expect a five-star place.

The welcome was pleasant, but the place looks like it’s been neglected for years. The rooms are in dormitory-style buildings, very dated, and only just adequate. They were relatively clean, and the beds were okay. I was only passing through for one night, which was unfortunately more than enough. Since everything in Koumac is closed on Sunday evening, the kitchen had pizza for dinner. It took about 50 minutes for one “giant” pizza to arrive, and the service was extremely slow. If the pizza had been good, that wait might have been forgivable, but it wasn’t. I’d strongly advise against the breakfast: a glass of unidentified but fairly refreshing tropical fruit juice, an oily croissant, a piece of baguette, tiny individual butter and jam pots, and coffee from an industrial machine. There wasn’t a single tea bag for people who don’t drink coffee. A real shame…
