The bathroom was the main letdown for me. It felt as though little care was being taken with its upkeep, and the facilities overall need better maintenance. The rooms are spacious with good lighting, though, and when I had an issue with my room, the staff were helpful and moved me to another one. The front desk was friendly, and I thought the food was good, though I only tried it once. The hotel is in a quiet, secure area, which is a real plus. It aims for a five-star standard but falls short of that in places. If I’m back in Port Harcourt, I’d consider staying here again.
I was waiting in the relaxation area for a friend who had been staying here for several days when a waitress, who looked to be in her mid-30s, came over and delivered the policy in one long speech: “nobody stays here for free.” I had barely sat down, and her expression and manner made me feel unwelcome. I was ready to leave right then. This comes from a place of hurt. It brought to mind a pattern I’ve seen in some Nigerian businesses, where making more money seems to come first, by any means. Hospitality businesses here need to think carefully about how they welcome people and keep improving that experience. I also feel staff may not understand how their interactions with guests can affect the business. This was my personal experience.
The lounge is nicely furnished, and the staff were professional and willing to help make the stay enjoyable. The rooms are good and not outrageously priced. I was pleasantly surprised by the touch of class throughout the hotel.
The pool was dry, there’s no gym or other amenities like that, and the bush bar was quiet at night. I also had a bump with housekeeping. Even so, I had a great experience apart from that issue. The rooms are spacious, with tubs in the bathrooms, and complimentary table water and coffee were provided daily. For what I paid per night, though, breakfast should have been included. The place is large enough for game nights, and the staff were prompt and nice. If no other hotel I try in Portharcourt tops southern star hotels Portharcourt, I’d come back to feel that warmth again. I’d hoped for a home away from home inside cocaine estate. The dry pool and lack of free breakfast are why I’m giving four stars.
Room 303 had several problems: the flexible hose under the water heater leaked, the shower head was faulty, its cover came loose, and the door wouldn’t lock properly. When I called at night to ask for fresh sheets because the ones on the bed didn’t feel fresh, reception said they couldn’t provide them then. Housekeeping should check that everything works before assigning a room, and faults need prompt attention. The building itself is nice, with a good reception area, a swimming pool, and a working elevator.
