La Veranera, Playa El Coco

Playa El Coco is a stunning beach, and this place is tucked away right on the sand. Katherine and the whole team do an amazing job. The service and food were great, especially the fried fish and fresh juices. I even saw baby turtles!

We were lucky enough to see a turtle come onto the beach in front of the place during the day, but it was unbearable and we had to leave early. The stay wasn’t worth the price, and we never felt welcome. We almost felt like we were disturbing the managers and their friends on their personal vacation, as if they were doing us a favor by renting us the place. There was a problem with Booking, or more likely with the hosts: we’d booked two rooms with private bathrooms, but one had a shared bathroom used by all the guest house guests. Once there, it was clear the place wasn’t being cared for. There were animals everywhere, things falling apart, and dirt all around. That’s a real pity because the place has a lovely setting, an amazing view, and a good structure that could make it welcoming. But things weren’t maintained. Cocktails were no longer made, apparently out of laziness, and the “staff” didn’t check if we needed anything, even for the included breakfast. The pool was breaking apart. We weren’t helped with the crabs in the shower. The pictures show what we found: a dirty bathroom, breakfast for five without a spoon or knife, a dirty kitchen sink left by the managers, and crabs in the shower.

The staff were amazing and always ready to help. Heidi went above and beyond, even bringing us brownies one night when we wanted dessert. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay. We’ll stay longer next time. Booking online was super easy, and availability came through promptly. We stayed two nights, and the ocean view room is a must: it was comfortable and beautiful, with perfect views and seating just outside the door facing the ocean. The patio hammock made it even better, and the beds were amazing. The pool was perfect after long beach walks, and the outdoor shower was awesome. We ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner there, and everything was so good. The pasta, chicken, and steak were all wonderful.

El Coco is a beautiful sandy beach and a good place to learn surfing. Just be aware that stingrays are common, especially at beaches south of San Juan del Sur. This rustic, cozy bed and breakfast sits right on the beach and offers great value. Heidi and the friendly staff were attentive and nearby whenever we needed something. The meals were simple but good, and we hope to come back soon.
