My event was cancelled unexpectedly, and I had booked a stay at Leerhotel Het Klooster to speak there. I understand the booking was non-refundable, but the hotel wouldn’t consider either moving the dates or giving even a partial refund, although the cancellation was completely outside my control. Situations like this make it feel as if the hotel cares more about protecting its bottom line than its guests. I was disappointed.

The former monastery is the main draw, and the peaceful setting around this historic building is lovely. Staff were polite and friendly, and they brought us an extra chair when we asked. But for the high price, the rooms felt basic: just a small table and one stool for two, with no mini fridge, bathrobes, or slippers. The TV only had cable, without YouTube or streaming. Our room was a little cold in late May, and we couldn’t turn on the heating. Breakfast was adequate, though more limited than at similarly priced hotels in the Netherlands, and they didn’t refill things during the final hour. At checkout, they charged us an extra €5 per person in tourist tax even though our booking said taxes were included. Card was the only payment option. I’d suggest staying here if the historic building and surrounding nature are what you’re after; otherwise, the hotel facilities feel overpriced.

The cloister setting is one of a kind, and our room was spacious, with high ceilings. This is a teaching hotel, so students are training there and some things can take a little longer while they learn. Give them a bit of patience and it’s a wonderful place to stay. We enjoyed our visit a lot and highly recommend it.

There’s a cosy, warm feel to the place despite its big, open spaces. It’s clean and tastefully decorated, and the staff are friendly and clearly keen to make your stay a good one.
