Van der Valk Hotel Assen

The receptionist was extremely rude and arrogant, and acted as if guests were beneath her. I honestly wonder how many nights she could pay for in the room I'm staying in on her salary, yet she behaves so superiorly. If she's still working there, she'll ruin a wonderful holiday.

The room was lovely, spacious and comfortable, and the hotel itself has a nice country house feel. It can be a long walk to reach your room. The only thing that bothered me was how poorly maintained the glass was. Otherwise, I had a great stay, and the staff helpfully booked me a taxi to the train station.

We've stayed here so many times, and this visit we got one of the new ground floor rooms. It looks much nicer than the old room, and is still wonderfully spacious. The wall is a deep purple, and the bathroom door is now right to the left as you enter instead of facing the bed. The beds are comfortable with soft bedding, and there's lots of room in the bathroom. I like having the shower separate from the bath, and toiletries are provided. Breakfast was included, and Van der Valk puts out a generous spread with tasty rolls, eggs cooked fresh, juice and more. We could eat in peace. If you're in a group, though, getting a single table together may take some luck since tables are arranged for two. Check-in was the one letdown. The blonde woman who helped us seemed very full of herself and cold, and didn't come across as suited to customer service. That's not what we're used to at Van der Valk. The next morning my uncle had forgotten his phone, and a young lady helped us. She was proper, service minded and very friendly, just as you'd expect from Van der Valk staff.

The buffet breakfast had plenty of choice, and I liked being able to get an omelette made fresh with vegetables and cheese. We also had a really good dinner in the restaurant the night before. We stayed over December 30-31 in a junior suite with a jacuzzi in the room at van der Valk hotel Assen. I’d definitely come back.
