Bastion Hotel Den Haag Rijswijk

The room itself was fine, but the night before, an encounter with the reception and bar manager was anything but pleasant. After a long workday, I came to the lobby with my manager, who was staying at the same hotel, and a colleague to have a drink and continue talking about work. It was about 10:40 pm. The bar attendant had told us the previous night that alcohol service ended at 11, but when we ordered, she said the bar had just closed and offered coffee, tea, or water instead. My manager jokingly asked what made it close before the stated time, whether it was her mood or the weather. She took that as arrogance and replied that she didn't owe us an explanation, the bar was closed because she had closed it. My manager said that didn't seem customer friendly and asked to complain to her supervisor, then asked for her name. Only then did she say the beer taps had run out, so she had closed early, adding that she didn't have to explain herself to everyone. She called the portier to intervene, even though we were calm and hadn't been aggressive. The portier started bullying us out of nowhere. When asked his name, he said he'd decided we couldn't stay at the hotel that evening. He couldn't explain the decision beyond saying he felt we were rude, and it wasn't clear where he got the authority to make it on his own. After we backed away because the whole exchange felt ridiculous, the reception manager offered bottled beer to other guests, even though it was already past 11. We hadn't even been given that option. So asking why the bar closed early got no answer, asking how to file a complaint seemed to make us eligible to be thrown out, and the portier could apparently decide on the spot who could sleep there. Guest treatment also seemed selective for no reason. It felt like Fawlty Towers. This is harder to accept because our nearby company has booked the hotel many times for visiting employees and colleagues from abroad. We felt personally insulted as guests.

A good choice for a business trip. The rooms are big and clean, and the staff are really friendly, especially at breakfast. It's a very solid hotel for the price.

The bedding smelled bad, and there was no air conditioning, which isn't what I expected at this price. The service was very rude too. A security guard barged into the room, made a fuss, threatened to call the police, and didn't even check whether the claim was true. I wouldn't recommend it. Worst stay ever.

The staff were welcoming and friendly, the one positive thing for us. We liked staying at Bastion Hotel in general, but this visit was a big disappointment. The room was small, with two small beds, and the bathroom barely had room to turn around. The shower was okay, but the toilet was awful, boxed in between two walls. In the end, we used the toilet by the restaurant. None of this was clear in the booking pictures, especially given our experience at other Bastion Hotels. Parking was included, but when we got back from a concert at night there were no spaces left. We skipped breakfast and won't book here again.
