Hotel Grand Café de Wijnberg

The central spot in Bolsward is the main plus, but the price is hard to justify. The rooms are tiny, the mattresses are terrible, and sitting on the toilet hurts your knees. Everything feels a bit dated, though some might find that charming. There's no closet, safe or fridge. Room service is there, but the cleaning feels superficial and things that need replacing or topping up get missed. Breakfast starts at 8 and is very limited. I understand you can ask for it earlier, though I don't know how that works out.

We left €75 poorer and won't be back. The food wasn't very good: the meat seemed blanched, then quickly finished on the grill, and tasted bland. There were no vegetables, either. The young staff seemed inexperienced, and one even picked a French fry off the table and put it back on the plate.

Bike rentals arranged by the staff became a highlight of our three-week Europe tour. We were a group of 12, with six children, and the friendly service team was very accommodating. The rooms were comfortable, the location was perfect, and we loved having drinks and dinner in the fantastic outdoor cafe afterward. We had a lovely stay at Hotel De Wijnberg last week and will definitely return.

We waited quite a while for a drink on the lovely terrace outside the hotel, but the staff kept ignoring us while chatting with friends at the neighbouring café. We eventually had to leave thirsty.
