The photo shows Trui van Essen van Surksum and Heimen van Surksum, who had a son, Frank van Surksum. Frank married Grandma Christina van Surksum-van Beek, and their three children were Trui, Heimen, and Anna, named after their parents. Grandpa Frank and Grandma Christina’s family story is told here through Trui van Essen van Surksum’s vivid, detailed account of life around 1900. She was a co-owner, married to Heimen van Surksum, and lived in Boeschoten in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I’ve heard many stories here about the Van Surksum family. The two children I knew very well, Heimen and Trui, have since passed away. They both lived to around Trui’s 93rd birthday and Heimen’s 94th.
It has such an old-world, almost medieval feel, and it’s a beautiful little village. I spotted a few buildings and wondered whether they’re available to rent. I’d love to spend a weekend there, so let me know if you know!
Whenever I walk by Klein Boeschoten, I stop in. It feels like time has stood still there.
A lovely stretch of woods for a walk.
