We slept really well because it was so quiet, and there’s plenty to do nearby if you have a car. The cottage sits among lovely nature, with great hiking around it, and we’d be happy to return. There are four beds across three separate bedrooms, reached by stairs. Downstairs is a living room with a kitchen and a breakfast bar for four. The shower and toilet are in separate rooms, which worked especially well for our larger group. Outside, the terrace looks out over greenery, and you can see your car from the window. A generous breakfast was ready for pickup at the time we’d agreed.

The studio was a great base for a few nights or longer, with walking and cycling routes around Buurse Beek and plenty to explore near Buurse. The Lodge also gives you wide views across this part of Twente, near the German border and Ahaus in North Rhine-Westphalia. We only stayed there one night, but a full week would be easy to recommend. If you like hot tubs, there’s one in the Lodge garden. It was a lovely, quiet setting in the rolling hills of Overijssel. We had a warm welcome from the son and hostess Gonny, who clearly explained the heating, laundry facilities and how to make coffee or tea. There’s also a microwave and stovetop. The place was comfortable and beautiful, kept warm by a heat pump, underfloor heating and radiators. The shower room was lovely, with foam and shampoo, and breakfast was extensive and delicious. The hostess was welcoming, flexible and quick to respond, and breakfast was fantastic, brought to the room in a cozy basket each morning. De Pol has several buildings for groups of different sizes, tucked among the trees at the edge of the Buurserzand, so it stays peaceful despite the range of accommodation. The rooms are small, but clean and equipped with what you need. It’s a great place to start the day and a good base for exploring Twente.

We booked the farmhouse and two studios to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. It’s a beautiful, peaceful spot in the woods, and coffee was already brewing when we arrived. The cottages were tidy and roomy. The farmhouse fit eight people and two young children easily, and the folder had all the key information and hiking routes. A few things about the farmhouse weren’t ideal: the bedrooms felt a bit bare, the mattresses were very hard, and the toilets and showers had a camping feel.
