Grand Hotel Ter Duin

Breakfast was poor for the price. Some food that should have been cold was warm, there were hardly any refills and lots of empty items, and some bread and other food was rock hard. When we raised it, reception sent us to the restaurant staff, even though reception is the guest contact point. We also saw reception blaming the restaurant staff in front of guests, which felt unprofessional. Our bill had drinks from other guests on it; they corrected it, but it still wasn’t a good experience. There was visible dust on the lobby’s flat surfaces, though our room was really clean. The place has a great grand hotel feel, with a striking lobby, modern rooms, good facilities, a nice spa with a pool, sauna and steam room, and a proper fitness area. There’s a large terrace for summer, and early check-in was possible, which we appreciated. Paid parking worked well, and the room key opened the exit gate. It’s quiet but right in the center of Burgh-Haamstede, which is a big plus. We stayed for two nights. The bar and restaurant staff were really friendly, but reception didn’t give us a friendly or hospitable feeling. The hotel itself is really good, though the breakfast and service need work. Better communication among staff and more attention to detail could make it a four-star place or higher.

The staff were helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. Our room was clean and well equipped, although it was a bit dated and had a few mainly cosmetic defects. The pool ladder needs fixing, despite the note saying it’s still safe to use. I’d stay here again, but some investment in the building and its upkeep would be welcome.

We liked that breakfast ran late and wasn’t too busy. It was great, and the rooms were large enough and quiet. The lobby is beautifully decorated, the garden and surroundings are well maintained, and the staff are friendly and very relaxed. There’s parking at a nearby hotel offered for free when the main lot is full. The hotel’s own parking area was always full after 7pm. We used the charging points, but one of the four wasn’t working. Still, we had a not so great stay and started calling it the dog hotel. We knew dogs were allowed, but it seemed like everyone brought huge dogs. That may suit dog owners, but combined with optional room cleaning it raised hygiene concerns. We stayed three nights and were itchy all over from the second day. It may have been bed bugs or dog fleas, but we can’t be sure. At check-in, we were told housekeeping wouldn’t enter unless we put out the “please make up the room” card. I assume that’s because they don’t want to go in while a dog is there, but with so many people and animals during peak season, hygiene suffers. Management should rethink this approach. The pool area is outdated, and the ceilings show the effects of humidity. The outdoor terraces weren’t very clean and seemed underused.

We chose the apartment, which had two separate bedrooms, and that was a real highlight. The kids had their own room, while we had space to unwind. It gave us both the comfort of a hotel and the privacy of our own space. Each family had booked a room to suit their needs, and the arrangements were handled with care. We spent an extended weekend at Grand Hotel Ter Duin with three generations of our family, and everyone, from the children to the grandparents, felt at home and well looked after. I’d asked for a small birthday surprise in the rooms for two birthdays. The hotel decorated them beautifully and gave us vouchers for coffee or tea with apple pie, a kind touch that made our arrival feel personal. The pool was almost entirely ours most of the time, so the children could splash around freely. Breakfast was generous, varied and regularly replenished. The softly lit breakfast room felt cosy and made for slow mornings. The lounge was spacious, attractive and actually used by guests, unlike so many hotel lounges that feel empty or forgotten. We spent several relaxed moments there, with plenty of drinks, snacks, tapas and full meals to choose from. Service around the hotel was friendly and approachable, and reception was always happy to help or suggest things to do nearby. It was a lovely family getaway, and we’d happily return.
