Hotel-Restaurant de Boer'nkinkel

Dinner was very nice, with good quality food, though the portions weren't large. They clearly put effort into the service, which was welcoming and professional. Breakfast was generous and tasty, with homemade jam, fresh fruit salad, cheese, ham, and delicious bread. We stayed in what the hotel calls a 'lodge'. It's basically a spacious room with a bathroom, decent and clean, without being especially grand.

I tend to be skeptical of food at hotel restaurants, especially in tourist areas, and I'm pretty critical. This place surprised me: the marinated BBQ beef and pork ribs were fantastic, among the best I've had in NL, and a bargain for the price. Their homemade tea deserves another two thumbs up.

We both ordered the Flank Steak, but as soon as it arrived, we noticed a strange smell. We tried a bite and told the waiter that it smelled and tasted off. He checked with the kitchen, then returned with the same plates and said the chef found nothing wrong. We said we couldn't eat it because something was clearly wrong, but he simply took back the uneaten food and brought us a €60 bill. There was no apology or offer of anything else. The staff were rude and unprofessional. I went with a friend, and neither of us would eat here again. If negative stars were possible, this place would get all five. Do yourself a favor and fast if you have to instead of eating here.

The staff were amazingly sweet and helpful, and there was a nice atmosphere. Hoenderloo is a lovely little village beside the national park. You can bring dogs when staying overnight, which is a plus. But dogs aren't allowed in the restaurant, even when quiet and leashed. There weren't two duvets for the double bed, either. The dinner prices and menu also didn't match what the website advertised, which surprised us a lot. Even so, we clearly recommend this place.
