Hotel Hof Van Gelre by Flow

I love how this hotel feels like a warm coat, with nostalgia and modern comfort together. It's not cold or overly modern, and it suits the surroundings perfectly. Walking through old Lochem helps explain why it feels right here, especially for people who appreciate the finer details of living. The staff are so friendly that you feel pampered the whole time, and there's a wide choice of really delicious food. For me, this is Holland's top hotel: warm, cosy, and a pleasure to stay in.

I arrived at another hotel in the middle of the night, distressed to find no reception, no answer to my calls, and no taxis around. With rain pouring down, I felt helpless. I called Hof van Gelre hotel to ask for help, and its staff came through for me. Brest Van Kempen, Martyn Bosveld, and Meike Schneider, thank you for your kindness and help. Though it was well past working hours, you came to pick me up from that isolated place and wouldn't accept payment. Without your quick, compassionate help, I might have spent the night outside in the rain, nowhere near anyone. You got me to safety and comfort, and restored my faith in humanity. I'm deeply grateful for the care you showed and have enormous respect for you. Your actions are a shining example of hospitality, and Hof van Gelre hotel is lucky to have such remarkable people on its team.

The service and breakfast were good. I liked the big table in the room, and the room was good overall, but it got too hot without any air conditioner or fan.

For a business trip, this hotel works well, and it's okay for a short weekend. Lochem's center is about a 10-minute walk away, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars nearby. The hotel's restaurant is fairly pricey, 14€ for a burger, so the nearby places give you alternatives. There's also a small indoor pool. The location in Lochem is close to many agricultural processing and support businesses. Service is good, but the property is showing its age. Like most small city hotels in the Netherlands, there is no air conditioning. Nearby Burchem has country hotels with better locations and more charm.
