Hotel Maassluis

The staff are amazing, and the view is nice, though I think the price could be lower. It’s a short, beautiful walk to the small town, where there are plenty of places to grab coffee or a beer. I’d stay here again.

The location is excellent for watching people and ships. I had a basic ground floor single room, but it was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. A corridor fire door separates the rooms from the bar and reception at night, so there’s very little noise. Breakfast was good, and the staff were attentive and professional. Lunch and dinner aren’t cheap, though the prices are in line with local pubs and restaurants.

The food was a mixed bag. Lunch and dinner were delicious, but the portions felt very expensive for what you got. For example, the soup was about €10, served in a small pitcher to pour into an empty bowl, and it only filled about half the bowl. Breakfast was horrible by comparison: everything was over-salted, especially the eggs, and the fruit wasn’t ripe. Some pieces that shouldn’t have been crunchy were crunchy. We still had a pleasant stay. The hotel is generally nice, the staff were pleasant, and it’s an easy walk into town for shops and other places to eat. The room was small but nicely done, with a comfortable bed and a desk. I would’ve liked more seating, since there was only one chair and the bed was the only other place to sit. The windows were frustrating. The one that was easiest to reach was locked shut. The one that opened swung out so suddenly that I had to stand on the chair and desk and lean outside to reach the handle and close it again.

There’s no DO NOT DISTURB sign, so we spoke to reception at night and asked them not to send room service before 12 o’clock or disturb us. They noted it somewhere, but the next day room service came in after knocking without waiting for us to answer. She was watching us in bed. Shame. Catastrophe. That same night, we said we’d confirm at 13 o’clock if we wanted to extend our stay by another night. They called at 11 to ask if we were staying. The personnel were totally confused. If you’re an organized, logical person, go to other hotels. 100 percent annoying.
