Stayokay Maastricht - Hostel

The hostel is right on the banks of the Maas River, and the city center is an easy walk away. It seemed very busy while we were there, so I'd book ahead. The reception staff were polite and understanding when a cancelled flight meant I couldn't make the first night. They kept my booking for the second night without any trouble, which I appreciated. The clean rooms were generally well maintained, and for up to two nights it was good value. The pillows weren't comfortable, though, and the wireless internet was poor and unreliable at times.

It's a brilliant central location, and the staff are polite and friendly. I found the dorm basic, quiet, and clean, with everything needed for a night's sleep and nothing fancy. It feels like very good value. I'd like guests to be assigned a bed instead of choosing one themselves. A little privacy curtain would be even better. Hopefully those changes wouldn't be too difficult to make.

The dorms were freezing, and everyone on the top bunks had to sleep in clothes under blankets. A shower drain also stayed broken for three days, with water spilling onto the floor. When we raised the cold with reception, the response was that nothing could be done, in a way that felt inhuman. My last visit was the worst. On a Sunday night I couldn't pay €28 by card, so I offered cash and said I could pay first thing in the morning. Despite having stayed with Stayokay for years, including in Amsterdam and Utrecht, they refused, threatened to call the police, and put me out on the street at night. A few staff members were genuinely kind, but in Maastricht I repeatedly felt unwelcome when asking for help. I've stayed here three times in the past month, for 3-4 nights each time, and the place seemed more focused on rules than making guests feel welcome. I got no trust, care, or solution over a small issue. I felt there was no respect for a loyal guest, just policies that serve the hostel. If they treated me this way after years of choosing the company, I can't imagine they'd care more about other guests. Choose somewhere people are valued.
