We stayed in one of the themed suites, and the huge rain shower and bathtub were lovely. The design details in the room are great, though cleaning seemed rushed: there was dust on the artificial plants, webs in the corners, and marks under the shower controls. The hotel is very large, with lots of facilities, including saunas, a pool, bars, vending machines and a big restaurant. It’s next to a road and an industrial or business area, so don’t expect much of a view. When dinner is included as part of a room deal, the choices are limited, but you can still have a decent meal. The food was about what I expected from a Van der Valk. Breakfast’s custom omelet station was the highlight.

Breakfast had plenty of choice, sweet and savory, and I enjoyed all of it. The people I met, from reception to housekeeping, were kind and professional. The hotel was clean, the beds comfortable, and the soundproofing between rooms was very good, so I got the rest I came for. The spa area is small, but it has what you need: hot and cold saunas, a hammam and a swimming pool. There’s also a nice gym, which I only noticed afterwards! The one downside is the setting. It’s in a business area near the highway, with little to see nearby, and Middelburg’s center is a few kilometers away on foot. I hadn’t known Van Der Valk, since there aren’t many in France, but I’d happily recommend this hotel and would consider other hotels in the chain in future.

The restaurant could use a few more choices. There was just one salad, Caesar, while other branches have options like the steak salad, which was outstanding. A lighter dish such as grilled chicken with vegetables would be welcome too. The fries with the steak had paprika seasoning, so it would be nice to have a plain version with just salt. Hotel ARA’s menu might be worth looking at, though it’s temporarily closed. The hotel and its facilities were excellent, and everything, including the rooms, was exceptionally clean. Compliments to housekeeping. Staff in reception, the restaurant and elsewhere were all polite and welcoming. I’ll certainly come back.

My colleagues like the hotel, so I may still book a room there. But I was very disappointed by the hotline. A young woman answered at 21:35 on Wednesday 25 February. She spoke Dutch; when I asked if she spoke English, she said no and hung up. That was very impolite and unprofessional. Sorry to have to share the bad news.
