Guesthouse Vertoef

I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. There was no value for money here. For a business trip, I need a decent bed and a generally clean room. Vertoef failed on both. The walls have no sound insulation at all, so you hear everything. It made sleeping difficult and also felt bad for information security during meetings. In February, the room was close to freezing, and the radiator couldn't warm it enough. The rooms are worn and not especially clean. There were only paper cups, and you have to pay extra to get cutlery in the room, which is ridiculous at this nightly price. Making tea means using an induction hob and an old-fashioned kettle. It works, but takes time. The bathroom was really cold, with poor ventilation and no heat. There were lots of black mould spots, and all sorts of stuff in the grout. The bed and mattress were awful. I sank into it and could feel every spring, and the bed squeaked too. Some of the worst sleep I've had in a long time, even counting a nap on a plane ;)

I went to Nijmegen at the end of Nov 2025 for an event with an intense schedule, and as a light sleeper, a good night's rest really mattered to me. I booked with an extended cancellation option because Guesthouse Vertoef is at a busy intersection. I messaged to ask for a quiet room, and they confirmed they could reserve one. If they hadn't, I would have cancelled. At check-in, I asked again whether room 306 was quiet, and the receptionist said it was. I was only in the room briefly during the day and, after two assurances from staff, didn't think I needed to check it myself. That evening, I found it was far from quiet. I could hear heavy traffic even with earplugs in. Reception was closed, so I couldn't ask to move. I complained to the receptionist in the morning, but he couldn't help and directed me to the info email. I wrote asking for a partial refund. They offered a discount on a future stay instead. I don't expect to be in Nijmegen in the coming years, and if I do go, I'll avoid Guesthouse Vertoef after this experience. I explained that by email and asked for compensation I could actually use. They said they couldn't offer anything else. I don't think a good hotel treats customers this way. Once you've paid, Guesthouse Vertoef seems not to care anymore. Based on that attitude, I would recommend avoiding this place.

The room was freezing. We found the heater and were okay under the covers in fluffy pyjamas, but who wants to sit in a hotel room wearing an overcoat? Prices and facilities were fine.

The rooms were clean and had quality beds, and the service was five-star. Right in the centre of Nijmegen, too.
