Landhuis "Op de Heugte"

We were ten adults, and this so-called holiday home was a complete disaster. It was dirty, run-down, uncomfortable, and felt hostile to guests. I can't understand why some people gave it five stars. The price was outrageous for a place in this condition, with a misleading description. It felt like hospitality didn't matter to the landlord, and that they were encroaching on the property. We felt exploited rather than welcome, and were disgusted by what we found. The rooms and furnishings were old and mismatched, like discarded furniture had been gathered and put inside. The wallpaper was scratched and full of holes, the windows were filthy with dead flies stuck on them, and you could hear every word and footstep throughout the house, leaving no privacy or chance to relax. The bathroom was disgusting, with mold in the grout, peeling silicone, holes in the walls, and a shower head that was broken and wouldn't stay in its holder. There was no electrical outlet for a hairdryer. The soap had been watered down. There was one full bathroom upstairs, while downstairs there was just a toilet with no sink, an impractical setup for ten people and one that meant touching doors with unwashed hands to get to a sink. The stairs were extremely steep and dangerous, not suitable for seniors or dogs, so our elderly fellow travelers couldn't use the sauna or whirlpool because they couldn't manage the stairs to shower. The property wasn't fully fenced as the owner had said, only partly bordered by piles of leaves, which isn't safe for children or animals. There weren't enough beds for ten adults, and one of the sleeping options was a crib. There were enough dishes and pots, but just one medium frying pan and no large bowls, which wasn't practical for a group of that size. The outdoor furniture was dirty and dilapidated. The candles had all burned out, and the holders and lanterns were grimy and sticky. The additional charges and deductions made things even worse. Towels with even small stains, such as makeup, meant deposit deductions: €15.00 for a large towel, €10.00 for a small one, and €4.00 for a washcloth. They threatened to deduct from the deposit if there was even one hair in the whirlpool. We paid an extra €125.00 for the sauna and whirlpool, but there was no wood included, and each bag cost another €6.50. We only found that out once we arrived, and it hadn't been communicated in advance. In November, how many bags would it take to heat a whirlpool? This felt like an outrageous rip-off. We couldn't use those facilities because of the stairs, but when we asked for a refund, they suggested showering outside. By that they meant cold well water in November. When we complained, they said a supposedly dirty duvet was now unusable and deducted its cost instead of refunding the services we hadn't used. Meanwhile, the pillows lying around were old, smelly, fuzzy, and had burn marks. We also had to take the trash some distance away and clean the floor ourselves despite the high cost, or face another deposit deduction. Even slightly misaligned furniture was charged as "damage" and deducted from the deposit. It seemed they were looking for ways to profit wherever possible. In the end, it felt like only money mattered, not the guests.

Everything you need is there, and the location is great. Fantastic.

A lovely place to slow down and unwind. The house looks beautiful, the rooms are excellent, and there are lots of amenities.
