Our room was small but comfortable, with very few amenities beyond a soap dispenser. It was clean and close to the shops in the town center. We were visiting Stadskanaal from Canada at short notice for my aunt’s funeral, and several staff members had known her. They shared kind words and good memories, as she had celebrated her 91st birthday there recently. My Dutch isn’t very good, but the hotel and restaurant staff were pleasant and helpful, and they accommodated two extensions to our booking. We didn’t have the Dutch vaccination certificate app. City Hotel accepted our Canadian documents, though another restaurant we tried had refused to serve us without the app. Breakfast was included and had options for Dutch and international tastes: rusks with cheese and hagelslag, scrambled eggs and bacon, yogurt, cereal, and fruit. The self-service coffee machine was so good we had seconds every day. We also ate dinner there twice. The menu is small, but both meals were freshly made and delicious.

The room was clean and cosy, the breakfast was very good, and the staff were cheerful and helpful throughout. We lost power in our room for a couple of hours, but reception fixed it within five minutes of us telling them. The lift is very old and slow, taking about five minutes to arrive and get you to your floor. It’s the only hotel in Stadskanaal, so it seemed to have most of the business. I’d recommend staying here.

The room was fine and the beds were good, but the food was a mixed bag. Some of the meat dishes were great, while the salads were past their date. The breakfast fruit was too.
