The setting and the surrounding region are lovely if you want peace and quiet. But check the specific accommodation carefully before booking, because cleanliness clearly wasn’t a priority in ours. There was hair and staining on the beds, spiders in almost every corner, and filthy window blinds. Getting air through the place was difficult. The pots and pans were old and dirty, and even made the food taste odd. The vacuum cleaner stank and was kept in the shed outside, along with the highchair. This is about the place we booked. The recreation park was okay, but Vogels Tun 23 felt dated and wasn’t very clean, despite the €50 cleaning fee. They had us wait in a separate cottage until the cleaning was finished. That isn’t how it normally goes after a stay.

We didn’t get a holiday feeling at all, and we won’t come back. The park felt deserted, with hedges so high that we felt boxed in. The pool is a 10-minute walk away, and using the tennis court costs extra. The house is badly located for getting anywhere, and the distances are ridiculous. You have to drive for everything. Shopping is only possible in Franeker, while the only beach option is in Harlingen, where it’s very small and dirty. For our family, this was one of our worst stays.

There are some lovely cycle routes in the area, accessible through the junction network. The park and cottages looked clean and well cared for, and the cottages were better equipped than you often find in holiday homes. It’s a pretty park in a sleepy village, with a tennis court, swimming pool, and cafeteria for snacks.
