Van der Valk Hotel Uden-Veghel

An affordable, nice hotel in Uden, with rooms that are a good size for a short trip and a very comfortable bed. You can rent a bike, and the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner without disappointing. There’s also a cafe/bar to hang out in, and we enjoyed a drink at the lovely Skybar. I’d stay again.

UPDATE 10/13/23: In my opinion, the hotel went to great lengths to refund the amount I’d overpaid. I’m raising the service score from 2* to 5* and my overall rating to 4*. I’d stay again, hopefully with a faster way to get around. Original review: I booked seven nights and paid at check-in, but my work finished a day early, so I checked out then. The clerk said the extra payment would go back to my card. Two and a half weeks later there was still no refund and no reply to my email, so I thought I’d have to dispute the charge with my card company. They would probably lose credit for the whole stay, not just the unused night. I’d heard they were supposedly transitioning into an immigrant housing facility, and if they needed funding, that shouldn’t be my problem. The room was nice, but the elevator was out of order the whole time and the rooftop bar was closed. It’s on the edge of town, so reaching the city center isn’t convenient without a car or a walk of about 30 minutes.

Getting downtown on foot took about 20 minutes, and I really enjoyed the walk. The room was small but comfortable, and the air conditioning helped me sleep even better. The hallway was darker than I liked, and the shower water seemed to come in two temperatures, hot or hotter. Breakfast was delicious, with lots of options. My favorite was the orange juice machine. The place felt fancy.

A pretty standard hotel, with the nice, clean, plush feel you’d expect from somewhere above budget level. Breakfast had a good range of food and drinks, and they could provide gluten-free bread when asked. There’s a kids’ play area, a gym, free parking and friendly staff. A few things let it down. The mini-bar was completely empty, and there was no soya milk at breakfast. On a Sunday night we asked for ice and three glasses in the room. It took ages, then when we called, they said they were busy and we’d have to collect them at the bar. Only one person was working there, handling a big order, so we waited another 10-15 minutes.
