Hotel Puur

We stayed for five days, and the hotel's best feature is its spot in the center of the old city, with plenty of places to eat and drink very close by. Christmas and NY time was especially beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was tasty, and the dining room was nicely decorated. Our room was small, but the bed was comfortable and the windows panoramic. Sound insulation wasn't great, so we could hear what was happening in neighboring rooms. For the first two nights, the bells from the city tower or church ringing every hour through the night felt strange. If you sleep lightly, I wouldn't recommend a room on the tower's side.

The staff were fantastic, though the hotel really needs updating. The rooms are poorly insulated, so you hear everything happening in the others. A nearby clock chimes on the hour and every half hour all night long, so don't expect much sleep.

The Asian kitchen was outstanding, and the price felt very good for this location. The rooms aren't especially flashy, but the staff were exceptionally friendly and sympathetic. Even in the middle of town it was quiet. I enjoyed hearing the old carillon nearby, along with a few jackdaws, wild pigeons, and even an owl early at night. Breakfast came with good coffee.

The smell was the main reason I wouldn't stay here again. I know there's a Chinese style resturant on site, and I'd heard it was really good, though we never tried it. But we were on the second floor and our room constantly smelled of fat or something frying. It seeped inside and got worse at certain times of day, which was extremely off putting. The location is ideal, with everything just a stone's throw away, but that's about where the positives end for me. Our room was mostly clean and OK. On the first night there was a random holey grey undefined sheet inside the usual white linen, and it didn't even fit the bed. The shower made me doubt it had been properly cleaned, since I was pretty sure it had been a cupboard before, and there was still calc. We also went out the back for a cigarette, then came into the bar wanting a night cap. Someone was working there, but after we stood around for a few minutes he never asked if we needed anything. I understand if the bar was closed, but he could have told us so we'd know it wasn't open. I wish I could be more positive, but I wanted to leave an honest review. Side note, the beer pub next door is AMAZING.
