Bed & Breakfast Fort Bakkerskil

I spent four nights here while attending an exhibition in nearby Gorinchem, and couldn't have chosen a better place. The hosts were lovely and breakfast was great. The fort has a character all its own, and although it's not far from the highway, it's very quiet and right by a cycling path. Every room has its own Wi-Fi router, with a mint connection. I'm looking forward to coming back.

We finished our two-week cycling trip with a stay at Fort Bakkerskil, and it was wonderful. The old fort has been decorated with real care and taste, with everything you need for a weekend away. We especially appreciated the exceptionally comfortable bed, quality showers, and buffet breakfast. Thanks, Laurens and Wilma, for such warm hospitality!

We stayed for a week because of extended business in Werkendam and needed somewhere nearby. We didn't want to cross the rivers, and traffic on the A-27 is always a mess. Fort Bakkerskil B&B turned out to be a great find. The fort is beautiful, the rooms are comfortable, and the mattresses are high quality. Each room has dedicated high-speed Wi-Fi, plus a minibar and everything needed to feel at home for a while. Laurens & Wilma were impressive hosts, ready to help with anything we asked. The peaceful fort and its surroundings are really relaxing. E-bicycle rentals at the fort let us explore the Biesbosch, Werkendam, and nearby areas. We could have stayed longer, and we'll be back.

The night was wonderfully quiet, and I enjoyed an early walk among the birdsong. Eggshells showed that geese had nested on the fort grounds. On arrival just before opening time, I first walked around the lovely rural fort area. QR codes at various spots link to stories you can listen to in "Dutch" over an internet connection. Marco handled check-in in a friendly, practical, businesslike way. From the confirmation email I already knew I'd been assigned the "old kitchen". It's a spacious room for two, with a comfortable high bed, a bathroom with shower, sink and "senior" toilet, a sofa, a table, and a small dining table with two chairs. There's coffee and tea-making equipment, plus a stocked minibar. The room opens onto the courtyard level, so no stairs or lift are needed. Two outside shutters and the door can be closed to darken it, so there are no curtains inside. Hanny's breakfast buffet was well prepared. With the site's rich history and its quiet spot in a rural natural setting, I'd be glad to stay again.
