The weekend we expected to spend relaxing turned into a day of stress and frustration because of the owner's careless handling of our booking. We'd reserved a room at B&B Huis Sevenaer weeks earlier, looking forward to the building and town. After we arrived and waited several minutes, the owner opened the door and, with a blank look, said she was fully booked and couldn't possibly have our reservation. She then took us to the kitchen without apologizing. There, through the paperwork, she found our booking and it was clear she'd put us on the list, but had given our room to someone else in a double booking. She said she'd only discovered this that morning and had no room for us, though she hadn't contacted us when she found out. The hallway had a strong cigarette smell. While she tried to sort out an alternative for another couple, we were left in the garden as she stood there with a cigarette butt in her mouth and a glass of wine. Then she casually offered us her own bed, explaining that she was renovating her house and had newborn pets. We thought the offer was hilarious and turned it down. There were no hotel rooms or B&Bs available nearby, so we ended up staying on the edge of a city, half an hour away by car. That wrecked our plans for dinner and a night out. The owner promised right away to reimburse the other hotel's cost, but it took three days and several reminders to get the money back.

We booked two rooms for four nights, but ended up leaving because the place was awful. The building smelled of cigarettes, as did the dirty bedding, while the bathrobes smelled sweaty. Breakfast rolls were clearly reheated and burnt. The shampoo jars had been refilled and were already used. On arrival, the host smelled of alcohol and was quite aggressive because she didn't want to wait for us to check in. We rebooked a lovely hotel ten minutes away, where we got a warm welcome and everything was wonderfully clean. I wish I'd known what to expect beforehand and could have avoided this. I didn't want to leave a bad review, but felt people should know.
