Kviknes Hotel

We stopped here for a day during our boat tour. It’s a beautiful hotel with lots of history, a great breakfast, and historic rooms downstairs that were fun to explore. I’d highly recommend walking around town, and if you enjoy a good hike, check out Raudmelen.

We had a fjord-view room on the historic side, with a private balcony. It was nice overall, though nothing spectacular apart from the wonderful view. There were lots of unpatched holes in the walls where things had once hung. Our room was right above a lower-level balcony where people talked late into the evening, and we could easily hear them. Both the dinner buffet and breakfast buffet were excellent, with lots of choices. The restaurant staff were consistently excellent too. We’d stay again if we could get a better deal on the price.

The setting and view are incredible, the buffet had good food and plenty of choices, and the service was great. The hotel itself needs a refresh, especially the bedrooms. The bedding wasn’t very comfortable, the sound insulation was poor, and the room style felt more like a retirement home than a hotel. I’d still recommend it for a night or two.

The location was the most stunning of anywhere I’ve stayed, overlooking the Songnefjord and surrounded by mountains. The historic wooden building is beautiful inside and out, while the modern building is an eyesore on the landscape. The rooms are basic and a little dated, but clean and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner buffets were very good, though they got a little boring after a week. The staff were very friendly, and one evening the fourth-generation owners from the Kviknes family gave a special history presentation. It’s a wonderful place to stay and a good base for exploring fjords, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes and rivers.
