Bergen YMCA Hostel

The location was excellent, and the rooms were spotless with quick WiFi. It’s a basic hostel, so breakfast and towels cost extra. The dorms are nice but crowded, and there aren’t many outlets, which makes charging devices awkward. Fine for one night, though I wouldn’t choose it for a longer stay.

The service stood out most. Lorna was lovely and knew her stuff, and a kind man with glasses was helpful too. I stayed in the women’s dorm, which had a decent sized room and a power block for everyone. There was also a well-stocked kitchen, a good lounge, and a great location.

I had a night train back to oslo after checking out, and the staff let me stay in the hostel and use the lounge that evening. Really great service. The staff were lovely, and the facilities were clean and fantastic. My all-female dorm was quiet and respectful, though a few more plugs would help. It’s a relaxed hostel in a great spot, close to the harbour and fish market and about 5 minutes from Bryggen. I’d recommend it.

The kitchen was fine and the lounge was pleasant, but the bathroom layout was awkward: the shower sits right beside the toilet, so after showering you have to push water around the toilet to reach the drain. The bathrooms were clean. In our six-bed room, the loud snoring from roommates got to us, though that wasn’t the hostel’s fault, and there was very little storage. We ended up cutting our stay short. I’d suggest spending a bit more to stay elsewhere in Bergen.
