Ole Bull, Best Western Signature Collection

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this hotel earned five stars from me. We stayed three nights, and when we accidentally left behind two small things 😅, the staff kept them safe for us to collect. The reception team were so nice and helpful, always available when we needed something. There’s free laundry and a well-equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and fridge. The spot in central Bergen is convenient too. What more could you ask for?

My booking had been confirmed for several weeks at €215, and I cancelled my other accommodation plans based on it. Then the general manager, Haris, emailed to say the reservation had to be cancelled because of a “technical pricing error” on Booking.com. I was offered cancellation or a chance to rebook at a supposedly “discounted” rate. After the 20% discount, the price would still have been €800, nearly four times what I’d originally booked. I don’t believe this was a “technical error”; people enter prices on Booking.com manually. It makes sense to change prices for new guests, but raising the price for someone with an existing confirmed booking is unethical and puts them in a serious financial bind. I lost money and the chance to book other affordable places by relying on this reservation. I’d strongly caution other travelers: bookings here may not be reliable, and you could be made to pay far more than the agreed price.

A great central spot, with very nice staff, and our room was clean and spacious. The main bed suited the kids, but the sofa bed was uncomfortable. The shower was strong and hot, perhaps too strong for the slow, blocked drain, since the bathroom flooded. The kitchen came in handy, though the dishwasher was full of dirty dishes when we arrived. The main downside was the nightclub in the same building block: thumping music kept us awake until 3am. It would’ve been good to know in advance. Maybe avoid a Saturday night if you’re staying here.

The team were so helpful during our three nights, and Berte at reception was especially lovely and kind. She gave us lots of good recommendations around Bergen. Our room had a clean, pleasant Scandinavian design. There’s free use of a washing machine and dryer, and the hotel is a five-minute walk from the center, fish market, tourist information center and byrggen. The hotel looked after our luggage while we were away. During our stay, we ate great fish at the market and took a five-hour ferry from the tourist information center to the fjords. In the middle of our three nights in Bergen, we rented a car from hertz, a 15-minute walk from the hotel, and drove 2.5hours to Eidfjord.
