We'd enjoyed vineyard visits in Napa Valley before, so while traveling around Norway we decided to try the world's northernmost vineyard. It turned out to be a very different kind of evening, in the best way. The owner handled the tour, cooked dinner, answered calls, and kept tending his small vineyard. He was happy to accommodate our few special requirements, too. There was none of the snooty talk about why the wine is supposedly the best. Instead, we sampled the unusual wines they'd been developing since opening a few years ago, without knowing what we were tasting. The owner could explain their aromas, colors, and notes, and we ended up laughing together while guessing which fruits had gone into them. By the end of the evening, we'd made friends with him and the people around us. The food and wine were really good as well. It felt authentic, relaxed, and unlike anywhere else.
