Havila Hotel Geiranger

The staff were friendly and very helpful, and the location is hard to beat. Room options vary: some are new and face the fjord, while others are older and look toward the mountain. The bathrooms are tiny and there's no storage space. Individual guests can be left waiting while huge tour groups check in together at this extremely busy tourist hotel. It's very expensive for what you get, and the groups occupy breakfast until 9am. At night, a nearby bar blasts loud music until 1am, even after the police visited. So much for a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the front-facing balcony, you'd expect to enjoy the natural scenery, but it feels more like a party island. I can't recommend this place. For dinner, definitely try Brasserie Posten, and book ahead.

The hotel is in a lovely spot, the service was very nice, and the food was good. What mattered most to us was how carefully they handled a serious peanut allergy in our group. We told the chef, who reassured us he'd prepare whatever we wanted with great care and personally made sure the meal was safe. We'd definitely come back if we're in Geiranger again.

The view of the fjord from the windows is worth a million. The rooms have been renovated but still feel old, and there was lots of dust on the floor. There was no soap, shampoo, or other hygiene products.

The staff were pleasant, the hotel was tidy, and the rooms were clean, though after cleaning there was an unpleasant smell from the cleaning products. They still use physical keys rather than cards, which makes it clear that no money is being put into renovations. Breakfast was catastrophic: the selection was small, and it seemed like the same food had been served for more than one day. It was hard and plasticky. I won't choose this hotel again.
