Heradshuset

This is a handy place to stop for the night or use as a base for seeing the area. The shared kitchen is fully equipped, and there are convenient bathrooms and a lounge and dining room. We had a spacious room for four. Diego explained that the hostel is in the old town hall, with the rooms converted from former offices. There’s a small supermarket across the street, and a nearby hotel if you’d rather eat out. The staff are ready to help with whatever you need.

We booked a double room and ended up in the mayor’s office, with a lovely fjord view and an incredibly comfortable bed. The building is the old municipality hall, which gives the place a lot of character, and it’s spacious and very clean. Andrea and Diego were warm and service minded, and pointed us toward some good hikes and bike rides. We also treated ourselves to dinner and breakfast at Jaunsen Gjestgjervarstad, the other hotel in town, and really enjoyed the food. They serve a set menu, with a vegetarian option if you ask ahead. Granvin and Heradshuset were both a pleasure. It’s a convenient stop for biking, hiking, swimming in the fjord, or sightseeing around Hardanger.

Three years in a row, and I’ve never been disappointed. The hosts are wonderful at making you feel at home and helping you find the things you’d enjoy most. The rooms are spacious and clean, with comfortable beds. I really love this place. I’d recommend it completely, especially for families 😀

The best part of our two week trip around Norway by far. The staff were friendly, the food was wonderful, and the rooms were better than we expected. Highly recommend.
