Hotel Norge Lillesand

The restaurant is very good, and the rooms are charming. They all feel a bit like being in a clean museum. I found the top apartments a little too tight for my claustrophobia, but all in all it's a good place.

The antique style inside is a lovely detail, and the rooms feel cozy. Beautiful hotel, with a very good breakfast buffet.

We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful hotel, and the dining room where breakfast was served was charming. We chose a breakfast time and arrived five minutes late; a three-tier tea tray came to our table for two with fruit, pastries, yogurt, eggs, salmon, and more. The breakfast itself was good. Lillesand is a very small town, so we were glad to find a place to stay there. The location worked perfectly, but the hotel's parking was full. We were told we could park across the small street until 10am, then would need to move the car. Since we were checking out anyway, it was fine, though I'm not sure where we'd have gone otherwise or whether we could have paid to stay longer. Our room was on the second floor of the addition. Even though we booked three months ahead, getting there meant carrying our light luggage through the whole parlor and hallway, through a glass door, and up spiral stairs. The old, historic building has clearly had some renovations, and the breakfast room and parlors look lovely. Our street-facing window brought loud exhaust from passing cars late into the night and again early in the morning, which surprised me for such a small town. There was no air conditioning or fan. We'd had a very rainy storm, but when it cleared on arrival it was sunny and around 70°F, leaving the room warm with no air moving. I wonder how guests manage in hotter weather. The bed had an IKEA foam mattress, about 3-4 inches thick, and it was as comfortable as I expected one to be. I'd have liked a fan, a quieter room, parking without the time limit, and a room that wasn't such a trek to reach. I know some of that may be outside the hotel's control, but for the price I think the bed and lack of a fan could be improved.

The staff were all friendly and helpful, and made us feel at home. I love the personal service at small hotels like this, and I'll gladly recommend Lillesand Hotel Norge. It's well run and has a free car park. Our room, number 302, was named for the famous Norwegian author Knut Hamsun. It was one of the most special hotel rooms I've ever visited; my attached photos will show what I mean. Each of the 25 rooms has its own style. The hotel sits in Lillesand’s picturesque harbour in a beautiful building dating from 1873. The rooms combine old-fashioned charm with modern comforts.
