The staff were genuinely helpful, and the hotel is handy for getting around Skien. My room was comfortable enough for a short visit, though nothing special for the price. The roadworks were the trouble: my room faced the main road, so weekend noise made sleeping difficult. It was quieter on weekdays. Parking was also awkward with construction going on, and I often had to squeeze into a questionable spot. Maybe I just had bad timing. For a three-star hotel, it was about what I expected, and I’d consider coming back after the work is finished.

Even arriving very late, checking in by ourselves was simple. The updated room looked really nice, and the beds were so comfortable. The morning staff were especially friendly and helpful. I hadn’t expected much, but the stay exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend.

The promised breakfast, room cleaning, and air-conditioning never materialized. Breakfast was supposed to start at 6:30, but the area was still closed when we arrived then, and nobody cleaned our room during the three days. We had booked Friday through Monday and found the room unbearably hot and humid, at 27-28 degrees. The desk couldn’t explain where the advertised air-conditioning was because there wasn’t any. I know it’s a cheap hotel, but we paid for those things and got none of them, and they didn’t seem to care. I was deeply disappointed. I’ll never return and can’t recommend this place.

The breakfast was really good, and both the shower and hotel hygiene were impressive. The rest of the stay had plenty of problems. There was no internet in the room, apparently for the past week, and I wondered if that was on purpose so guests couldn’t easily write reviews. The curtains barely blocked the midnight light. With them closed and the lights off, I could read in bed at 4am. There was no mini fridge or coffee in the room either. I bought a litre of milk, left it on the second-story window sill to keep cool, and an opportunistic crow tore it open. Now I’m risking avian flu while dripping what’s left onto my cornflakes. The electric car charger was really expensive, about $70USD to top up after we drove straight from the airport on our first day in Norway. The entry cards worked until I went out looking for coffee, then neither fob let me back in. Maybe it was a simple electronic fault, but it added to the hotel’s inadequacies. Nobody wants a business to fail. I sincerely hope the Henriks Hotel owner reads this and makes changes so future guests can make an informed choice. I learned something from the experience: birds drink milk.

I had a very bad experience with the service and with the smell in my room, which was awful during the several days I stayed there. When I asked the information desk if I could change rooms, she quickly told me there weren’t any. I explained how bad the smell was, and she replied that I should leave the hotel because she couldn’t help and there were no vacant rooms. I was shocked and asked what she had said. Then she said they would look at the room and see what the problem was. She told me her name was INDRE and that she wasn’t Norwegian, but an immigrant. I left because I can put up with a smell and I’m sensitive, but I can’t tolerate being treated that way.
