Dinner was a real highlight, especially the fresh Norwegian salmon with its lovely buttery taste, and everyone on staff made us feel welcome. We also loved the Aufguss ritual in the floating saunas, such a relaxing, unusual experience. Waking up beside the water with those fjord views was wonderful. Son Spa is a peaceful escape just a short drive from Oslo, and I can’t wait to come back.

The spa is beautiful, and dinner was excellent. The facilities and food lived up to what you'd expect from a high-end spa. But the reception service and the problems with our room overshadowed the stay. Our room was extremely cold from the start. The heaters barely warmed up and couldn't heat it properly. We checked in at 17:00, and soon after called reception because we needed an extra blanket. Lars said it would be there within 30 minutes. We were traveling with a dog, so we explained that staff could only enter while we were present. The spa closes at 21:00, so we had only a few hours to use it on our first day. Over the next several hours we called reception repeatedly and were told the blanket would arrive “soon.” At 20:30 we had to leave for our dinner reservation, which we mentioned several times. On our way to dinner, we ran into the reception supervisor. She knew about the issue and was initially coming to bring hangers. We told her we were heading to dinner, our dog was in the room, and it would be better to bring the blankets after we got back. She said that was fine and she'd bring them then. After dinner, we saw her again on the way to our room and reminded her we were upstairs and available. She said again she'd bring the blankets right away. We waited, but another hour passed. It was late, the room was cold, and there was still no blanket. When we called again, Lars answered. He said staff had already tried to deliver the blankets and we'd refused them. I calmly explained what had happened and said I'd spoken with his supervisor. He replied that she'd told him a “different story” and there were “four different versions,” which effectively called me a liar. He was extremely dismissive and hostile, then hung up while I was still speaking. Later I went downstairs to buy a chocolate from reception, and Lars refused to sell it. The chocolate wasn't the point. His attitude and lack of professionalism were. We lost our first day: we missed out on the spa, spent hours in a cold room waiting, and felt disrespected and unheard. It's a real pity, because the spa and restaurant are wonderful. The facilities deserve better hospitality, professionalism, and respectful communication at reception. I hope management addresses this.

It's a nice place with good facilities, but at these prices I expected to feel properly looked after. We didn't, and I probably won't come back, which is a shame. Parking costs extra. The alternatives were a free local car park 10 minutes away on foot, or a slightly risky five-minute walk over wet rocks. The food was mediocre too: 525kr for a steak that was just a simple entrecote with chips, though it was nice enough. When we asked for vinaigrette for the salad, they brought a bowl of vinegar instead, and the waitress rolled her eyes when we said excuse me to ask for the dressing. The receptionist wasn't welcoming or smiling either. I paid for a 50 mins massage but got 40 mins, since five minutes were lost at each end. While I was relaxing during those final five minutes, I was told to leave the room for the next customer. It's a reasonably high priced spa hotel, and I was happy to pay for the occasion, but there were too many issues. It's definitely overpriced.

We had a great weekend in a good-sized room with a nice outlook, and made full use of the spa. Lena was excellent with the rituals, and the restaurant was convenient for dinner with very good food. Sunday lunch on 26/10/25 nearly spoiled the weekend. The restaurant service was really poor, and the more senior staff left a junior staff member to try to handle us. We raised it at reception and got brushed off with “You will get an email.” And guess what? The link doesn't work!

The fjord view is breathtaking, and the experience was great. If you're in Norway, don't miss this dream destination.
