Amazing food and views, and a real gastronomic experience. Walaker feels like genuine Norwegian history and luxury, without needing all the bells and whistles of a grand dame hotel. Five-star experience in every way.

They kept calling after us even after we’d decided to leave. We’d asked how to go inside to make a dinner reservation while walking past, without trying to enter, but were repeatedly told to “read the sign.” It only said private property and didn’t say we couldn’t ask questions. They spoke over us and asked, “did you not see the sign,” as if we couldn’t read. By the time it became clear we could make a reservation, we’d been talked down to so much that we walked away. It was outrageous. The hotel can choose not to allow non-guest visitors, but there was no reason to explain that so rudely, unkindly, and mockingly. If you’re not staying there, be ready to be condescended to near the hotel.

The staff were as lovely as people say, and made us feel valued in their home. We had access to the main grounds if we wanted to walk over, but the outdoor seating looked onto the parking lot and ferry. We’d booked a superior room knowing it was in another building, yet the room didn’t feel up to the standard of the rest of the property. You’re really paying for the extra space, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The room was fine for a quick stay, and the heated bathroom floor was nice, but the bathroom felt old. Our shower didn’t drain, leaving us in inches of water, and the hair dryer was broken. These weren’t major problems for a short visit, but they took away from the experience. I’d recommend booking a room in the original hotel.

The warmth of the staff made us feel special, and my family and I will definitely return. Staying at The Walaker Hotel felt like being part of living history and treated like royalty. The historic building’s architecture and carefully chosen details have a timeless beauty, with culture and attention to detail that are hard to describe. The hospitality was warm, genuine, and refined. The service, atmosphere, and cultural depth left us at a loss for words, but gave us memories that will last a lifetime. It was an extraordinary blend of history, elegance, and heartfelt Norwegian hospitality. Thank you all for your kindness. Love from me and my family.
