Tyrifjord Hotell

Our balcony room had plenty of space, and the staff were genuinely kind and polite. Right by the lake, the hotel looked clean and welcoming when we arrived. I only missed having a way to make a hot drink in the room.

The staff were excellent, and the food and drinks were reasonably priced for Norway. Our room was spacious, with a great bathroom, and the little fridge was handy. I’d recommend getting a balcony room facing the lake if you can. The view over the Tyrifjord from ours was spectacular, and the setting is beautiful. Getting there and around Vikersund was the main drawback. Public transport is limited, though that’s not the hotel’s fault. It’s about a half-hour walk from the train station, which is fine in good weather and less pleasant in rain. Taxis cost a lot. We went to Krøderbanen in Krøderen, around 25km away, and paid over £70 each way. We needed to get there and back to Vikersund for the twilight train from Krøderen to Snarum and back.

We stayed for one night and found the room poorly maintained and overpriced. The bathroom hadn’t been cleaned, with hair in the shower sink and dust everywhere, which felt very unhygienic. It was very hot in June, so we opened the window for air, but there were lots of spider webs, dead insects, and dirt along its sides. When the wind blew, it all came into the room, so we had to close it. We arrived late and only needed somewhere to sleep, so we let it go and didn’t ask to switch rooms. Still, the state of the room really wasn’t worth the price.

The food was very good, the staff were nice, and the atmosphere was pleasant. A couple of things could be better: more signs would help guests find the rooms, and my drink took too long to arrive. The staff seemed less used to making drinks. The hotel was otherwise clean and nice, and I had a satisfying stay. Recommended!
