A pottery class at Pottery Square gave me a fun, hands-on way to appreciate the patience and skill behind the craft. A friendly local vendor even offered me a private class at a very affordable price, possibly because it was low season. The owners and artisans were welcoming and happy to share stories about their work and heritage. The square is only a short walk from Nyatapola Temple. It’s a living museum as much as a marketplace, with courtyards and structures that make a peaceful, nostalgic setting, and an earthy clay smell in the air. You can watch local artisans shape pots, utensils, and decorative pieces, each reflecting Bhaktapur’s artistic heritage. If you visit, leave time to meet locals, support their art, and maybe take home a handmade souvenir. Go local, support local, and get a feel for Bhaktapur here.

At Pottery Square, near Nyatapola Temple, local artisans make all sorts of clay utensils using traditional techniques. Visitors can have a go at making pottery themselves too.

It’s fun to watch local people making pots and other things from clay. You can take a class too. The vendors offered me a private lesson for a very affordable price, maybe because it was low season.

On your way between temples in Bhaktapur’s old city, you can stop at Pottery square. The handmade pots are laid out in the sun to dry, and you can watch how they’re made. They’re mainly used for paying tribute to the Gods.

Pottery is laid out to dry, and in the morning you can watch people making it. It’s a short walk from Durbar square, so worth stopping by if you’re nearby.
